World Kindness Day: Celebrating the Power of Handmade Gifts

At La Basketry, we’re passionate about the beauty of handmade gifts, mindful crafting, and the power of small, thoughtful gestures that brighten someone’s day. World Kindness Day, celebrated on 13th November, resonates with us as a beautiful reminder of how simple acts of kindness—whether in the form of a handwritten note, a handwoven basket, or a moment of mindful connection—can make a world of difference.

What is World Kindness Day?
World Kindness Day began in 1998 through the World Kindness Movement, a coalition that encourages kindness around the globe. Today, this day is celebrated worldwide, inviting us all to be a little kinder to one another. At La Basketry, we see kindness as being intertwined with the spirit of craftsmanship and sustainability. For us, it’s about taking time to create meaningful, lasting connections through thoughtful and eco-friendly practices.
Handmade Gifts: A Meaningful Act of Kindness
In our world of quick conveniences, handmade gifts stand out for their warmth, intention, and timeless quality. When you give someone a handcrafted item, especially something made with care and love, it’s an act of kindness that speaks volumes. Whether it’s a handwoven basket, a unique ornament, or a homemade card, these gifts have a story and carry a piece of the person who made them. Handmade gifts show that someone took the time to create something special—more than just objects, they’re gifts of time and thoughtfulness.
3 Ideas for Handmade Kindness Gifts
Why not take a moment today to create something special by hand for someone you love? Here are three simple but meaningful crafting ideas:

1 . Woven Hearts

Create a small heart woven from natural fibres or paper, a beautiful symbol of love and kindness. You could even use colourful scrap fabric or yarn for a unique twist. These woven hearts can be kept as a small keepsake, used as ornaments, or given as tokens of appreciation to spread warmth to friends or neighbours.

2 . A Twine Basket Filled with Goodies

Make a small twine or raffia basket, perfect for beginners and experienced weavers alike. Once complete, fill it with little treats: perhaps homemade biscuits, a candle, or even some handpicked flowers. It’s a gift that’s both practical and heartfelt, showing someone you took the time to craft something unique just for them.

3 . An Upcycled Basket Using Scrap Fabric

Gather some fabric scraps or an old T-shirt and upcycle them into a small basket. By twisting or braiding the fabric and weaving it, you’ll create a one-of-a-kind piece that’s sustainable and meaningful. This basket is a wonderful reminder of how we can turn simple materials into something beautiful and useful—and it’s perfect for storing small trinkets.

La Basketry’s World Kindness Day Giveaway

To mark this special day, we’re hosting a giveaway on Instagram! Head over to our post and tag someone who could use a bit of cheer. We’ll be selecting five people at random to receive a surprise gift from us—perhaps a woven piece, a kit, or a book to inspire their own crafting journey. This giveaway is our way of sharing the joy of handmade gifts and giving back to our supportive community.
Happy World Kindness Day from all of us at La Basketry!
