La Petite Senna: Handmade Dolls Celebrating Diversity and Craft

When I think back to my childhood, dolls were more than just toys - they were companions, a source of imagination, and a bridge to self-expression. But like many, I grew up yearning for dolls that looked a bit more like me, dolls that reflected the diverse beauty of the world around us. This sentiment has shaped my passion for La Basketry and is the heart of La Petite Senna, a collection of crochet dolls with handwoven cots - designed with diversity and craftsmanship at their core.
A Journey Rooted in Diversity and Craftsmanship
In spring 2023, I connected with the talented Julia of Coton & Gourmandises    based in Dakar, Senegal. Julia’s work is nothing short of breathtaking: she creates crochet dolls with incredible attention to detail, and each doll tells its own story. We quickly envisioned a collaboration that would marry her crochet dolls with the traditional Senegalese craft of basket-weaving - a skill I’ve nurtured through my own work with La Basketry.

Our collaboration came to life six months later, in November 2023, with the launch of La Petite Senna, named after my daughter. This collection consists of three unique crochet dolls, each representing a different skin tone to celebrate diversity. Each doll also comes with a beautifully handwoven cot crafted by skilled artisans in Thies, Senegal—the birthplace of La Basketry. Our first two drops sold out almost immediately, proving that parents are eager to support toys that reflect the world their children live in.

Why Diversity in Toys Matters

The importance of diversity in toys cannot be overstated. It is essential that children, especially from a young age, see themselves represented. When a child plays with a doll that resembles them, it reinforces positive self-image and inclusivity. Toys that reflect a variety of skin tones, hair textures, and cultural backgrounds help build empathy and awareness, allowing children to appreciate differences from an early age.

Barbie, one of the world’s most iconic dolls, only launched its first Black Barbie in 1980. While this was a groundbreaking moment in toy history, it was also a reminder of the importance of representation in children's playthings. Today, we have more options than ever, but there is always room for more thoughtful and inclusive designs. La Petite Sennais our contribution to this important movement. These dolls celebrate both individuality and universality—they're dolls that every child can cherish, regardless of background.

The Art of Crochet and Basket-Weaving: A Testament to Craft

What makes La Petite Senna dolls truly special is the blend of crochet and basketry. Crochet has long been celebrated for its warmth and handcrafted charm, while basket-weaving is one of the world's oldest and most revered crafts. Together, these crafts bring a sense of artistry and tradition that is hard to find in today’s mass-produced toys. Each doll’s woven cot is made from locally sourced materials in Thies, supporting the artisans who have honed this skill over generations. These dolls are more than toys - they are little works of art that introduce children to the beauty of handmade craftsmanship.

The Perfect Christmas Gift for Boys and Girls Alike

If you're looking for a unique and thoughtful Christmas gift, La Petite Senna is perfect for little girls and boys alike. These dolls encourage imaginative play and help children appreciate the beauty of diversity. Each doll’s unique design and cosy woven cot make them a delightful addition to any child’s toy collection, bringing warmth, heritage, and inclusivity into their world.
