La Basketry x Diverse Gifts: Celebrating Black History Month and Craftsmanship in Brixton

As the founder of La Basketry and the author of Woven, I’m passionate about the art of basket weaving and celebrating culture and community. This Black History Month, I had the privilege of hosting a workshop at Diverse Gifts, a much-loved store in Brixton that has championed diversity and inclusion for over 20 years.

Diverse Gifts, owned by Anita Thorpe, has long been a hub for creativity, showcasing products from Black creators and celebrating the cultural richness of Brixton. The shop offers a curated selection of thoughtful gifts, books, and homeware, highlighting artisans and makers from diverse backgrounds. It's not just a shop, but a space that reflects the vibrant, multicultural spirit of Brixton.

Honouring Black History Month Through Craft

Black History Month is a time to celebrate the ongoing contributions of Black communities, and for me, it holds special significance. Basket weaving, a craft deeply rooted in African heritage, has been passed down through generations, and it was an honour to share this ancient art form during the workshop.

The workshop, held at Diverse Gifts, focused on coiling, one of the oldest basket-weaving techniques. Participants were able to create their own baskets using colourful twine and a rope base, combining tradition with modern design. It was a rewarding experience seeing everyone—from beginners to seasoned crafters—engage with this mindful, hands-on process.

Why Diverse Gifts Matters

For over two decades, Diverse Gifts has been more than a shop—it’s a platform for underrepresented voices, particularly from Black creators. In a retail world where diversity is often lacking, Diverse Gifts provides an essential space for artisans and designers, helping them thrive and reach new audiences.

The shop's collection includes everything from hand-crafted homeware and fashion to books and art, making it a unique shopping experience in the heart of Brixton. Its focus on quality and cultural representation has earned it numerous awards and a loyal customer base.

Having Woven stocked at Diverse Gifts is a personal milestone for me. My book explores the beauty of basket weaving and how it connects us to our roots. To see it on the shelves of a store that shares my values of diversity, craftsmanship, and community is truly special.
